How do I verify a provably fair game?
Reveal the server seed, then recompute the HMAC of the server seed, your client seed and the nonce and compare it with the result the casino showed. Do it after a session rather than never, and prefer an independent verifier over the casino's own widget.
How often should I change my client seed?
Weekly is enough for most players. Change it as well before a long session and after every server seed reveal, and keep a separate seed for each platform.
This page was written as a confession: seven provably fair mistakes that “cost me $47,000 in 2024”, with a price tag on each one — $19,400 for never verifying the hash chain, and an accusation that one platform ran a broken chain for eleven days. No such losses were recorded and no platform was named or checked. The mistakes themselves are real and worth knowing, so here they are without the invoice.

One correction to the old version
The old text claimed that reusing a client seed for months makes your rolls “predictable, an easy target for bots”. That is not how the scheme works: the outcome depends on the server seed, which you do not know until it is revealed, so a reused client seed does not let anyone predict anything. Rotating it is still good practice, because rotation is what forces the server seed to be revealed and lets you verify — not because a bot is reading your rolls.
